Life Story

Tomás Vieira Mariois a journalist by profession, being licensed in Legal Sciences from the Polytechnic and University Higher Institute (ISPU), Maputo (now Polytechnic University). He also took a master's degree in legal sciences from Eduardo Mondlane University and a course in regulating social communication from the Legal Communication Institute of the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra.

He has been a professor at the Polytechnic University where he has taught the Law and Deontology of Social Communication and Legal Rhetoric since 2006. Since 2015 he has served as President of the Superior Council for Social Communication, appointed by the President of the Republic. In 2012 he founded the SEKELEKANI Communication Research and Studies Center, of which he is Executive Director.

As a media professional and researcher, the author performed, among others, the following functions: Director of Television Information of Mozambique (TVM); Correspondent of the Mozambique Information Agency (AIM) in Portugal; National Director of the Southern African Research and Documentation Center (SARDC); National Coordinator of the UNESCO Media Development Program; Executive Editor of the National Human Development Report (UNDP); Civil Society Planning and Development Specialist (PNUD) in Maputo; and President of MISA Mozambique, a civic organization defending press freedom.

As a political analyst, the journalistic career of Tomás Vieira Mário will have had as one of the highest moments the full coverage of the peace negotiations in Rome (June 1990 to October 1992), between the Mozambican Government and Renamo, which culminated with the signing of the General Peace Agreement, dictating the end of 16 years of war in Mozambique.
